IB Economics rewards a very specific skill that schools teach unevenly: evaluating, not just explaining. Every high-tariff question — the Paper 1 essay, the Paper 2 part (g) evaluation, the Paper 3 policy recommendation — is marked on whether the student weighs arguments and reaches a justified conclusion. Students who write everything they know score 4s and 5s; students who select, apply and evaluate score 7s. Our IB Economics tutors build the essay and evaluation structures that make the difference visible to examiners.

The current syllabus (first assessment 2022) is organized around microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy — with nine key concepts (scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention) that both papers and the IA portfolio expect students to deploy. HL adds quantitative extensions: calculations of elasticity, costs and revenues, national income, and the quantitative demands of the Paper 3 policy paper.

The internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries — each up to 800 words, each on a different unit and a different key concept, each analysing a real news article published within the last year. It is worth 30% at SL and 20% at HL, and it is the most coachable part of the course: article selection, concept framing and the diagrams that carry the analysis.

We work with IB Diploma students at international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh and Kuwait, across Europe, and in the USA and Canada. Lessons are 1-to-1 online with a shared whiteboard for diagrams — demand/supply, AD/AS, elasticity, market failure — at evening and weekend times that fit around Gulf, European and North American school weeks.

Where Students Struggle in IB Economics

These are the IB Economics sticking points our tutors solve most often.

Essays that explain but never evaluate

Part (b) marks go to weighing — assumptions, stakeholders, short vs long run, 'it depends on'. We teach reusable evaluation structures and drill them across every topic until evaluation is habit, not afterthought.

Diagrams drawn as decoration

A demand/supply diagram only earns marks when it is accurate, labelled and actually used in the analysis — shifts referenced, changes explained. Tutors coach diagram-first answers where the picture does the reasoning.

Real-world examples that aren't real

The current syllabus requires genuine examples — 'a country' does not count. We build each student's example bank topic by topic, so Paper 1 answers cite real policies and real economies.

IA articles chosen too late and too broad

Commentaries fail on the article: too old, too macro for a micro concept, or no diagrammable theory inside. Tutors coach selection early — three articles, three units, three key concepts — then the analysis structure, with the writing left to the student.

Paper 3's quantitative core (HL)

HL students often meet Paper 3's calculation parts underprepared — elasticity, national income, cost/revenue tables. We drill the quantitative toolkit separately from essay practice, because it is marked differently and faster to improve.

How IB Economics Is Assessed

Each component rewards a different skill, so tutoring is planned around the components your child sits.

ComponentFormatWeighting
Paper 1 — Extended response essayOne essay chosen from three, drawn from all units. Part (a) requires explanation (10 marks), part (b) evaluation (15 marks). Real-world examples are required — a new feature examiners enforce strictly. 1h 15m.SL 30% · HL 20%
Paper 2 — Data responseOne question chosen from two, based on published text with quantitative and qualitative parts — definitions, calculations, diagrams and a final evaluation section. 1h 45m.SL 40% · HL 30%
Paper 3 — Policy paper (HL only)Two compulsory questions on a policy scenario, combining quantitative analysis with an extended recommendation that weighs two policies. The most technically demanding paper — and the biggest HL differentiator. 1h 45m.HL 30%

IB Economics Tutoring FAQs

Which IB Economics syllabus do you teach?+

The current IB Economics guide — first assessed in May 2022 — covering microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with the nine key concepts, real-world example requirements, and the HL Paper 3 policy paper.

What's the difference between IB Economics SL and HL?+

SL and HL share the core units, Paper 1, Paper 2 and the IA portfolio. HL adds quantitative extensions inside each unit, the extra HL market-structures material, and a whole extra exam — Paper 3, a 1h 45m policy paper with compulsory quantitative questions — worth 30% of the grade. HL is recommended for economics-related degrees.

How does the Economics IA work?+

You build a portfolio of three commentaries, each up to 800 words, each on a different unit and a different key concept, each analysing a news article published within the past year. It is worth 30% of the SL grade and 20% at HL. Tutors coach article selection, concept choice and analysis structure within IB academic integrity rules — the writing stays yours.

Is IB Economics hard?+

It is accessible to students who like structured argument — but the grade ceiling is set by evaluation and real examples, not knowledge. Most students stuck at 5s write correct economics without weighing it; once evaluation technique is trained, 6s and 7s follow quickly.

My child studies IB in Dubai or Doha. Do lesson times work?+

Yes. We schedule 1-to-1 lessons in Gulf Standard Time and Arabia Standard Time, including weekday evenings and weekends, around the UAE, Qatar, Saudi and Kuwaiti school weeks. We also teach students across Europe and North America in their local time zones.

When should IB Economics tutoring start?+

Early DP1 is ideal — demand/supply analysis and diagrams are the grammar every later unit uses. Many students also join when the IA portfolio begins, for article selection and commentary technique, or before mocks for essay and Paper 3 practice.
