Book a Free Demo ClassTutoriz provides 1-to-1 online IB Chemistry tutoring for Standard Level and Higher Level students on the current IB Diploma syllabus, organised around the Structure and Reactivity themes. Tutors cover Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data-based questions, Paper 2 written answers and the Scientific Investigation (IA), with sessions scheduled in your time zone. Every student starts with a free demo class.
IB Chemistry changed shape for students who started the Diploma from August 2023 onwards. The old numbered topics and options are gone; the course is now built around two themes — Structure (what matter is made of and how it is held together) and Reactivity (what drives change, how much, how fast and how far, and by which mechanism). Revision guides, YouTube playlists and older siblings' notes are often organised the old way, which is one reason students feel lost. Our IB Chemistry tutors teach directly from the current guide and its linking questions, so the student's mental map matches the one examiners use.
Most marks in IB Chemistry are not lost on recall. They are lost on multi-step quantitative reasoning — moles to concentration to enthalpy in one question — on unfamiliar data in Paper 1B, and on extended Paper 2 explanations that name the right idea but skip a step in the chain. Tutoring sessions are built around those skills: worked problems that are gradually faded out, timed sets of mixed questions, and explicit practice reading the IB data booklet quickly and accurately.
Higher Level adds substantial Additional Higher Level (AHL) content: entropy and Gibbs energy, Born–Haber cycles, Ka, Kb and buffer calculations, electrochemical cells and standard electrode potentials, SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, electrophilic addition and substitution, stereoisomerism and spectroscopic identification including 1H NMR. HL students are matched with tutors who have taught HL specifically, because the gap between SL and HL is wider here than in most Diploma subjects.
We work with IB Diploma students at international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh and Kuwait, across Europe, and in the USA and Canada. Lessons are 1-to-1 online with a shared whiteboard for structures, mechanisms and calculations, at evening and weekend times that fit around Gulf, European and North American school weeks.
IB Chemistry Topics We Cover
Our tutors cover the full range of IB Chemistry topics across all major curricula and exam boards.
Where Students Struggle in IB Chemistry
These are the IB Chemistry sticking points our tutors solve most often.
Calculations that chain together
IB questions rarely ask for one step. Students who can do moles, concentration and enthalpy separately still lose marks when the three are combined. Tutors use faded worked examples until students can plan the full chain before touching a calculator.
Paper 1B data they've never seen
Paper 1B rewards practical thinking — spotting systematic error, propagating uncertainties, judging whether a conclusion is supported. We practise with unfamiliar data sets every week instead of leaving this to the final month.
Mechanisms memorised, not understood
Curly arrows learned by rote fall apart on a new molecule. Tutors teach nucleophiles, electrophiles and leaving groups as a small set of electron-movement rules, so HL students can predict SN1 vs SN2 or addition vs substitution on unseen structures.
An IA research question that can't be measured
Many IAs fail at the design stage: too many uncontrolled variables, too few data points, or a dependent variable school equipment can't measure precisely. Tutors coach the student's own question toward something focused, feasible and analysable — the investigation and write-up remain the student's work.

How IB Chemistry Is Assessed
Each component rewards a different skill, so tutoring is planned around the components your child sits.
| Component | Format | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1A — Multiple choice | Multiple-choice questions across the whole syllabus (more questions at HL). Sat in the same session as Paper 1B; no calculator, data booklet provided. | Paper 1 total: SL 36% · HL 36% |
| Paper 1B — Data-based questions | Questions built on experimental data and practical scenarios: reading graphs and tables, processing uncertainties, evaluating methods. Sat together with Paper 1A (SL 1h 30m, HL 2h for the whole of Paper 1). | Included in Paper 1 |
| Paper 2 — Written responses | Short-answer and extended-response questions, many combining several syllabus areas in one context. SL 1h 30m, HL 2h 30m. Calculator and data booklet allowed. | SL 44% · HL 44% |
| Internal Assessment — Scientific Investigation | An open-ended investigation of the student's own design, about 10 hours of work, written up in no more than 3,000 words. Marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation; moderated by the IB. | SL 20% · HL 20% |

IB Chemistry Tutoring FAQs
Do you teach the new IB Chemistry syllabus?+
Yes. Our tutors teach the current IB Diploma Chemistry guide — first taught from August 2023 and first examined in 2025 — which is organised into Structure and Reactivity themes with no options. If your child's school resources still use the older topic numbering, the tutor will map them across so nothing is missed.
What's the difference between IB Chemistry SL and HL?+
SL and HL share the same core content, papers and IA. HL adds the Additional Higher Level material — including Gibbs energy, Born–Haber cycles, Ka/Kb and buffers, electrode potentials, organic mechanisms and NMR spectroscopy — plus longer papers and more multiple-choice questions. HL usually needs roughly twice the study time, and is often a requirement for medicine, chemistry and chemical engineering degrees.
Can a tutor help with my Chemistry IA?+
Yes, within IB academic integrity rules. Tutors help students refine a research question, think through variables and controls, plan data collection, process uncertainties and understand the four assessment criteria. They do not design the investigation for the student or write or edit the report — your teacher gives the formal draft feedback the IB allows.
How do you prepare students for Paper 1B?+
With regular practice on unfamiliar experimental data: reading graphs and tables, calculating and propagating uncertainties, identifying random and systematic error and suggesting improvements to a method. Because these are the same skills the IA assesses, Paper 1B practice and IA preparation reinforce each other.
My child is studying IB Chemistry in Dubai or Doha. Do lesson times work?+
Yes. We schedule 1-to-1 lessons in Gulf Standard Time and Arabia Standard Time, including weekday evenings and weekends, around the UAE, Qatar, Saudi and Kuwaiti school weeks. We also teach students across Europe and North America in their local time zones.
When should IB Chemistry tutoring start?+
Ideally early in DP1, when Structure 1 and 2 build the quantitative and bonding foundations everything else depends on. Many students also join before DP1 mocks, during IA planning in DP1 or DP2, or for intensive past-paper preparation before the May or November exam session.
