Statistics is half of the applied content in every English A-Level Maths course, yet it is the part students most often under-prepare. Unlike pure maths, statistics questions are marked on interpretation as much as calculation: the final mark usually goes to a sentence that states a conclusion in context, a comment on the suitability of a model, or a criticism of how a sample was taken. Our A-Level statistics tutors train both halves — the mechanics of the test and the wording that secures the interpretation marks.
We tutor the statistics content of all the main boards — AQA (Paper 3), Edexcel (Paper 3, Section A) and OCR A (Paper 2) — plus the statistics options in Further Maths and the probability and statistics units of International A-Level (CAIE Papers 5 and 6, Edexcel International S1–S3). Because each board weights topics differently and prescribes its own large data set, your child is matched with a tutor who teaches their exact specification.
Sessions build from the foundations examiners assume: sampling methods and when each is appropriate, measures of location and spread, probability rules including conditional probability and independence, the binomial and normal distributions, correlation and regression, and the full hypothesis-testing cycle — hypotheses, test statistic, critical value or p-value, and a conclusion written in context.
We work with sixth-form students across the UK, Europe and the Gulf — including students at British-curriculum international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh taking International A-Level statistics units. Lessons are 1-to-1 online with a shared whiteboard for distribution sketches, regression lines and worked hypothesis tests, at times that fit around the school week.
A-Level Statistics Topics We Cover
Our tutors cover the full range of A-Level Statistics topics across all major curricula and exam boards.
Where Students Struggle in A-Level Statistics
These are the A-Level Statistics sticking points our tutors solve most often.
Hypothesis-test conclusions that lose the last mark
Students calculate the test statistic correctly, then write 'accept H₀' or forget to answer in context. Tutors drill the full closing sentence — evidence against H₀, stated in the language of the question — until it is automatic.
Choosing the wrong model
Binomial or normal? One-tail or two? Correlation test or test on the mean? We train a decision routine — what is being measured, how many trials, what is fixed — so students can justify the model instead of guessing it.
Large data set unfamiliarity
Edexcel and AQA questions assume students have worked with the prescribed large data set — its variables, its quirks, how it was collected. Tutors walk through the actual data set so exam references to it feel routine rather than surprising.
Calculator statistics mode left unused
Binomial cumulative probabilities, normal inverses and regression coefficients all come straight from the calculator's statistics mode — marks are lost to arithmetic slips when it is not. We coach ClassWiz-style statistical functions inside every topic.

How A-Level Statistics Is Assessed
Each component rewards a different skill, so tutoring is planned around the components your child sits.
| Component | Format | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Edexcel A-Level Maths — Paper 3, Section A: Statistics | A 2-hour paper split into Section A (Statistics, ~50 marks) and Section B (Mechanics). Statistics covers sampling, probability, distributions, regression and hypothesis testing, often set against the prescribed large data set. | Paper 3 is 33⅓% of the A-Level |
| AQA A-Level Maths — Paper 3 (Pure + Statistics) | A 2-hour, 100-mark paper mixing pure and statistics questions. AQA prescribes its own large data set; questions may reference its context and expect familiarity with how the data was collected. | Paper 3 is 33⅓% of the A-Level |
| OCR A A-Level Maths — Paper 2 (Pure + Statistics) | A 2-hour, 100-mark paper combining pure mathematics and statistics: sampling, probability, binomial and normal distributions, correlation, regression and hypothesis tests. | Paper 2 is 33⅓% of the A-Level |
| Further Maths & International options | Edexcel Further Statistics 1–2 (chi-squared, Poisson, exponential, quality of tests), CAIE AS & A Level Probability & Statistics Papers 5 and 6, and Edexcel IAL units S1–S3 — each adds estimation, more distributions and formal inference. | Varies by board and unit |

A-Level Statistics Tutoring FAQs
Is A-Level statistics a separate A-Level?+
In England, statistics is studied as part of A-Level Maths — about a sixth of the assessment, as half of the applied content — rather than as a standalone A-Level. Statistics also appears as optional units in Further Maths, and International A-Level qualifications do offer separate statistics units (CAIE Probability & Statistics Papers 5–6, Edexcel IAL S1–S3). Our tutors cover all of these routes.
Is A-Level statistics hard?+
Students usually find the calculation side manageable; the difficulty is interpretation. Marks depend on explaining conclusions in context, commenting on models and sampling methods, and reading unfamiliar data — skills that need different practice from pure maths. With targeted tutoring it responds quickly, because the exam technique is highly learnable.
Which exam boards do you cover for A-Level statistics?+
We tutor the statistics content of AQA (7357), Edexcel (9MA0) and OCR A (H240) A-Level Maths, the statistics options in Further Maths for all boards, and International A-Level statistics units including CAIE Probability & Statistics and Edexcel IAL S1–S3.
Can you help with the large data set?+
Yes. Edexcel and AQA each prescribe a large data set that statistics questions can draw on. Tutors make sure students know the variables, how the data was gathered, and the typical question styles that reference it — an easy source of marks that schools often leave to the last minute.
Do you teach the calculator statistics functions?+
Yes. We coach the statistics modes used in exams — binomial and normal probabilities, inverse normal, and regression calculations — on the calculator models students are allowed to bring. Calculator fluency removes the arithmetic slips that cost method marks.
When should A-Level statistics tutoring start?+
Year 12 is ideal, when probability and distributions first appear and habits form. For Year 13, starting by January leaves time to master hypothesis testing and the large data set before Paper 3-style revision begins — the statistics paper is often the most improvable third of the grade.
