Book a Free Demo ClassTutoriz provides 1-to-1 online IB Computer Science tutoring for Standard Level and Higher Level students on the current syllabus (first assessment May 2027) — Theme A concepts including machine learning, and Theme B programming in Java or Python. Tutors coach Paper 1 including the case study, Paper 2 code-reading and algorithm questions, the computational solution IA, and the collaborative sciences project, with lessons scheduled in your time zone. Every student starts with a free demo class.
IB Computer Science has just been rebuilt. Students who started the Diploma from August 2025 study a syllabus organised into two themes — Theme A: Concepts of computer science (computer fundamentals, networks, databases and a new machine learning topic) and Theme B: Computational thinking and problem-solving — with first exams in May 2027. The old option papers and Paper 3 are gone; the case study is now studied at both SL and HL and is examined in Paper 1. Students revising from resources built for the previous course can easily prepare the wrong content. Our IB Computer Science tutors teach directly from the current guide, and also support the small number of students finishing the outgoing syllabus in its final sessions.
The new course is far more practical than its reputation suggests. Paper 2 requires every student — SL and HL — to read, trace and write code under exam conditions, answering in either Java or Python. There is no computer in the exam room: marks go to students who can trace a loop on paper, predict output, spot off-by-one errors and sketch an algorithm in pseudocode. These are learnable skills, but only with regular practice, so sessions include weekly code-tracing drills alongside syllabus teaching.
Higher Level adds real depth rather than just more content: abstract data types (stacks, queues, linked lists and binary trees), more demanding machine learning material including data preprocessing and ML approaches, and a longer case study. HL students are matched with tutors who have taught HL specifically, because Paper 2 at HL expects fluent algorithm design, not just syntax recall.
We work with IB Diploma students at international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh and Kuwait, across Europe, and in the USA and Canada. Lessons are 1-to-1 online with a shared code editor and whiteboard for diagrams, traces and algorithms, at evening and weekend times that fit around Gulf, European and North American school weeks.

Where Students Struggle in IB Computer Science
These are the IB Computer Science sticking points our tutors solve most often.
Tracing code without a computer
Paper 2 is sat on paper: students must trace loops, predict output and find logic errors by hand — a skill most have never practised. Tutors run timed code-tracing sets every week until reading code is as fast as running it.
Syntax learned but algorithms not designed
Students who can write working code in class still freeze when asked to design an algorithm to a written specification. We practise decomposing problem statements into pseudocode first, then translating — the same order examiners reward.
OOP that stays theoretical
Encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism are often memorised as definitions rather than used. We build small programs where each concept earns its place, so Paper 2 OOP questions become applied rather than recalled.
A machine learning topic with thin school resources
A4 Machine learning is brand new for the 2027 syllabus, and many schools are still building materials. Tutors teach the topic directly from the guide — ML fundamentals, approaches, and HL-only data preprocessing — plus the ethical-evaluation answers examiners look for.
An IA scoped too big to finish
The computational solution fails most often at the brief: a problem too large for 35 hours, or success criteria that can't be evidenced. Tutors coach the student's own idea toward something focused and measurable — the design, code and write-up remain the student's work.

How IB Computer Science Is Assessed
Each component rewards a different skill, so tutoring is planned around the components your child sits.
| Component | Format | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Theme A + case study | Questions on computer fundamentals, networks, databases and machine learning, plus a section built on the annually issued case study. Previously HL-only, the case study is now examined at both levels. SL 1h 15m, HL 2h. | SL 35% · HL 40% |
| Paper 2 — Theme B: computational thinking | Programming and problem-solving questions answered in either Java or Python: reading and tracing code, completing algorithms, and writing short solutions in approved notation. No computer is used in the exam. SL 1h 15m, HL 2h. | SL 35% · HL 40% |
| Internal Assessment — the computational solution | A solution to a real-world problem of the student's own choosing, developed through the computational thinking process — about 35 hours of work documented against success criteria, with a code appendix and video demonstration. Marked on criteria spanning design, development and evaluation; moderated by the IB. | SL 30% · HL 20% |
| Collaborative sciences project | An interdisciplinary group project shared across DP sciences, studied in class rather than examined — about 10 hours. It does not carry marks toward the grade but is a required part of the course. | Required, ungraded |

IB Computer Science Tutoring FAQs
Which IB Computer Science syllabus do you teach?+
We teach the current syllabus — first taught from August 2025 and first examined in May 2027 — organised into Theme A (computer fundamentals, networks, databases, machine learning) and Theme B (computational thinking, programming, OOP and, at HL, abstract data types), with the case study now assessed in Paper 1 at both levels. Students finishing the outgoing syllabus in its final sessions are also supported.
Is IB Computer Science hard?+
It is one of the more accessible Diploma sciences for students who practise programming regularly — but Paper 2 is sat without a computer, so marks depend on reading and writing code by hand, a skill most students have never trained. With weekly code-tracing practice it is very learnable; students who leave programming to revision season find it much harder.
Do I need programming experience before starting IB Computer Science?+
No prior experience is required at SL or HL — the syllabus assumes none. In practice, students who have written any code before DP1 start with an advantage in Theme B, so many of our students take a few preparatory sessions in the summer before the Diploma to learn basic Java or Python.
Should I answer Paper 2 in Java or Python?+
Paper 2 lets students choose Java or Python, and the IB publishes both versions of each question. We recommend answering in whichever language your school teaches — and tutors work in both. For students choosing freely, Python is usually the faster route to fluency, while Java maps more directly onto the OOP content.
What's the difference between IB Computer Science SL and HL?+
SL and HL share both themes, Paper 1, Paper 2 and the IA. HL adds the extra topic of abstract data types (stacks, queues, linked lists, binary trees), deeper material inside every other topic — including data preprocessing and ML approaches in A4 — plus longer papers and a weighting shift that makes the external exams 80% of the grade versus 70% at SL.
Can a tutor help with my Computer Science IA?+
Yes, within IB academic integrity rules. Tutors help students choose a feasible problem, define measurable success criteria, review their development approach and understand the assessment criteria for the computational solution. They do not design the solution or write code or the report for the student — the IA must remain your own work, and your teacher provides the formal feedback the IB allows.
My child studies IB Computer Science in Dubai or Doha. Do lesson times work?+
Yes. We schedule 1-to-1 lessons in Gulf Standard Time and Arabia Standard Time, including weekday evenings and weekends, around the UAE, Qatar, Saudi and Kuwaiti school weeks. We also teach students across Europe and North America in their local time zones.
When should IB Computer Science tutoring start?+
Ideally early in DP1, when Theme B programming habits form — code-tracing fluency takes months of practice, not weeks. Many students also join before the IA planning phase, at the start of the case study term, or for intensive Paper 1 and Paper 2 preparation before the May exam session.
