IB English rarely goes wrong because a student hasn't read the books. It goes wrong because the Diploma tests something most students were never taught directly: how to build an argument about how a text works, under time pressure, about a passage they have never seen. Our IB English tutors teach that skill explicitly — moving students from summarising what happens to analysing authorial choices and their effects on a reader.
We tutor both Group 1 courses. English A: Literature works entirely with literary texts, including works in translation. English A: Language & Literature adds non-literary texts — advertisements, speeches, cartoons, opinion columns, infographics — and asks students to read them as carefully as a poem. The assessment components share names across both courses but demand different reading habits, so we match each student with a tutor who teaches their actual course and level.
Lessons follow the IB's own architecture: the three areas of exploration (Readers, writers and texts; Time and space; Intertextuality) and the seven course concepts, from identity and culture to representation and transformation. Tutors help students turn their Learner Portfolio into a working bank of evidence that feeds the Individual Oral, the HL Essay and Paper 2 — instead of a folder nobody opens until April of DP2.
Sessions are 1-to-1 and online, scheduled in your time zone, with timed practice and written feedback against the published IB assessment criteria. We work with IB Diploma students at international schools in the UAE, Europe, North America and beyond, and with MYP Language & Literature students who want a stronger start before the DP.

Where Students Struggle in IB English
These are the IB English sticking points our tutors solve most often.
Retelling instead of analysing
The most common Paper 1 problem: paragraphs that paraphrase the passage. Tutors train the move from 'what the writer says' to 'what the writer does and why it matters', anchored to the guiding question.
Paper 2 essays that never compare
Many students write two mini-essays stitched together. We build comparative thesis statements and paragraph structures that weave both works together from the first sentence — and help students prepare flexible material for unseen questions.
A global issue that's too broad
'Gender' or 'power' isn't a global issue the Individual Oral can sustain for ten minutes. Tutors help students narrow to a precise, arguable issue and choose extracts that genuinely illuminate it.
The HL Essay left until the last minute
Without a real line of inquiry, the HL Essay becomes a generic literary essay. We coach students to refine a focused question early and draft in stages, so the argument — not the deadline — shapes the essay.

How IB English Is Assessed
Each component rewards a different skill, so tutoring is planned around the components your child sits.
| Component | Format | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Guided analysis | Unseen passage(s) with a guiding question. SL: one text in 1h 15m. HL: two texts in 2h 15m. Literary passages in Literature; non-literary texts in Language & Literature. | SL 35% · HL 35% |
| Paper 2 — Comparative essay | One essay comparing two works studied in class, answering one of four general questions. 1h 45m, closed book, at both levels. | SL 35% · HL 25% |
| Individual Oral | 15 minutes: about 10 minutes exploring a global issue through extracts from two bodies of work, then about 5 minutes of teacher questions. Internally assessed. | SL 30% · HL 20% |
| HL Essay | A 1,200–1,500 word formal essay developing a line of inquiry on one studied work or body of work. Externally assessed. HL only. | HL 20% |

IB English Tutoring FAQs
Do you tutor IB English Literature or Language & Literature?+
Both. English A: Literature and English A: Language & Literature share the same assessment components, but Language & Literature uses non-literary texts in Paper 1 and the Individual Oral, which needs different analytical vocabulary. We confirm your child's course and level in the free demo and match a tutor who teaches it.
How do you help with Paper 1 unseen analysis?+
Through repeated timed practice on unseen passages, with feedback against the four IB criteria: understanding and interpretation, analysis and evaluation, focus and organisation, and language. Students learn a repeatable annotation and planning routine so they can produce a focused argument within the exam time, whatever the text type.
Can a tutor write or edit my Individual Oral or HL Essay?+
No — and you shouldn't want them to. Both are assessed as the student's own work under IB academic integrity rules. Our tutors coach the thinking: choosing a global issue or line of inquiry, selecting extracts, structuring an argument and practising delivery. Teachers give the formal draft feedback the IB allows; we help students get far more out of it.
What's the difference between SL and HL IB English?+
HL students study more works, analyse two unseen passages in Paper 1 rather than one, and write the externally assessed HL Essay. SL is still demanding, but the components are weighted differently — Paper 1 and Paper 2 together make up 70% of the SL grade, so exam technique matters even more.
Do you also tutor IB English B?+
Yes. English B is a language acquisition course for students who are not studying English as their Group 1 language. Tutoring focuses on the written productive task, reading and listening comprehension, and the Individual Oral, with literary extracts added for HL students.
When should my child start IB English tutoring?+
Early DP1 is ideal, because analytical writing habits take time to build and the Individual Oral usually happens before the end of DP1 or early in DP2. Many students also join in the run-up to mock exams or the May/November session for intensive Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice.
